Youngah Kim

Youngah Kim

Executive Director (2015 – )

Through refugees, I witness the world; I meet kind neighbors nearby and also see the cruelty of societies and communities that draw lines between themselves and others and treat people inhumanely. When I see dignity and resilience in refugees, I feel a sense of the sublime. I persistently and quietly work to build a democratic society where refugees’ voices are not silenced and a culture where conflicts are resolved peacefully. Recently, my focus has been on cultivating MAP into a space where everyone can meet in their own name and support each other.

Board of Directors

  • Bohyun Kim (Head of Good Samaritan House Shelter )

I strongly agree with the vision pursued by ‘Migration to Asia Peace’ and want to join in creating peace.

  • Cheolhyo Kim (Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Kyungpook National University)

My main research and teaching areas are migration sociology, human rights sociology, social change, and social movements. With MAP, I have mainly collaborated on research projects, including the experiences of migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic, a survey on the actual conditions of refugees, and a survey on the experiences of refugee children and adolescents.

  • Sungjoon Moon (Student, School of Law, Kyungpook National University)

I worked at MAP for 2 years and 6 months (2 months as a volunteer and 2 years 4 months as an activist). I have viewed MAP from both the activist and volunteer perspectives, and I possess diverse experiences as an educator and a learner, as well as in project planning/operation/execution/support. I have consistently delved into MAP’s culture, aspirations, and policies. I will provide sharp and affectionate opinions on the big and small dynamics that arise when those interested in refugee protection visit the MAP platform.

  • Jiyoung Park (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Welfare, Sangji University)

I am a scholar who has researched the social suffering of people living as social minorities and vulnerable groups, and the deaths they chose, from their own perspectives. Through their lives and deaths, I constantly confirm how important respect, recognition, and efforts for coexistence are in our lives. Now, making Migration to Asia Peace another field, I contribute my efforts to gather the voices of refugees so that they have equal opportunities for coexistence with anyone. Hoping for the time when all refugees are respected and recognized.

  • Junghyun Cho (Secretary General, Jeonju YMCA)

Currently, I am active in the Jeonbuk region and Korean civil society based at Jeonju YMCA, focusing on community movements, democratic citizenship education, peace and unification movements, and youth movements. I have participated in civic networks as a committee member and activist in Korea YMCA, Korea Civil Society Organizations Network, National Network for Democratic Citizen Education, and Peace and Unification Movement. I have also participated in civil-government governance such as the Youth Protection Committee, Peace and Unification Advisory Committee, Unification Education Committee, and Education Governance Committee. Currently, I am primarily active in the Jeonbuk region, and through several years of solidarity with MAP, I have gained a new understanding of global citizenship, peace movements, and diversity.

  • Nari Yoo (Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, University of Michigan)

My research areas include the welfare and mental health of immigrants/refugees and ethnic minorities, and the social and mental health services that support them. Recently, I have been particularly interested in how to address language accessibility in refugee support through digital technology. I started volunteering at MAP in 2019 and have been providing website/administrative support for five years. I have also participated in research projects and programming (especially planning of ‘Displaced’).

Auditor

  • Yeonju Kim (Full-time Activist, Refugee Rights Center )

I started advocating for refugee rights in 2013 and first connected with Youngah Kim, Executive Director, and Jooyoun Cho, Secretary General, of ‘Migration to Asia Peace (MAP)’ while preparing for Refugee Week 2013, ‘Refugees, They Are With Us.’ I always support MAP’s activities, who tirelessly work to help refugees who have involuntarily migrated to Korea safely recover their daily lives and envision their future, accompanying them, continuously finding and organizing necessary activities, and traveling nationwide to create a culture of living together.

Advisory Committee

  • Bitna Jung (Manager, Sarangieum)

Meeting Ms. Youngah Kim and Ms. Jooyoun Cho of MAP inspired me to dream of social innovation and change, and I became a fundraiser in a non-profit organization. Over the past 7 years, I have grown by building a career in public relations, content marketing, donor management, small organization fundraising, and major gift fundraising. I provided fundraising consulting to MAP and ran MAP’s first fundraising campaign, the ‘Ilpyeongsincheong’ campaign.
