Q1. Please give a brief self-introduction!
Hello. My name is Bae Seong-bin, and I study art history at a graduate school at Seoul National University. I am working as a second-half volunteer on MAP’s PR Team. I will do my best so that MAP’s activities can reach more people.
Q2. Please tell us about your motivation for joining MAP and the work you do.
I spent my undergraduate years abroad. Even though I was an international student who had migrated voluntarily, I faced difficulties. When I was younger, I used to release those difficulties through complaining. But after I returned to Korea, no longer as a foreigner, the complaints I had voiced came back to me as a sense of debt. I want to help create a society in which people like my past self, or people who have gone through greater hardship than mine because of involuntary migration, have less to complain about. I now belong to the PR Team. My goal is to make MAP’s activities known in many ways so that more people can reach them.
Q3. Is there something you have never done before that you would like to try in order to discover yourself?
I want to try everything I have never done before. I graduated while almost confined during the COVID period, so I regret that I may have missed many precious opportunities that could only be experienced at that time. Until I find what I truly want to do, I would like to try a short but colorful period of wandering.
Q4. There are times when, whether or not others recognize it, you look at yourself and think you are cool. When was the moment you were coolest in your life?
It is not something I have achieved myself so much as an attitude I always pursue naturally. It is putting myself in the other person’s position. I think that for individuals and society to become more inclusive and open-minded, an effort to put oneself in the position of the other person, whoever that person is, comes first. When I feel myself trying to internalize this attitude, I think, “I am doing well!”
Q5. Lastly, what kind of “change” do you want to bring about through your activities at MAP?
I think that everyone is already in the position of a minority or a potential minority. I think that true empathy and openness bloom only with this awareness of being a person concerned. As a member of the PR Team, I will think about how I can spread this awareness!
