including the international exchange club, English newspaper club, current affairs research club, book discussion club, educational volunteer club and history inquiry club.

When I began the conversation by introducing myself as a refugee, the students listened closely to what I said and asked many questions about the refugee issue. There was so little time that I could not answer all of the questions. The question I remember most was whether I feel positive about US troops being stationed in Afghanistan and other countries, and my answer was “No.” This is because I have experienced how a country is affected by the arbitrary intervention and withdrawal of great powers. Even when the surface intentions are good, the involvement of other countries can lead to even greater chaos for weaker countries.

The students took part actively in the conversation and asked many questions I have never been asked before. For example, I was asked what “profit Korea could gain by accepting refugees” would be. Trade and exports are important to Korea, and refugees can contribute to growth by providing labor to export-related industries such as manufacturing. However, I think that economic profit alone should not be considered when deciding whether to accept refugees. By that logic, there would be no reason to accept refugee children or refugees with disabilities, who need more protection. We need a deep discussion about who refugees are and why we accept them.
